The realism tattoos in Valencia are a greyscale art form that goes beyond the ordinary. It is more than a technique; it is an aesthetic expression that captures depth and emotion through shadow and contrast.
Every shadow, detail and line is a story and a visual melody in itself. Rather than relying on colour, we immerse ourselves in the play of light and shadow to create designs.

General characteristics of this style
Realism is generally characterised by:
Photographic precision
Realism tattoos stand out for how closely they resemble a photograph on the skin. Realism artists are experts at rendering light, shadow and contrast so the design looks three-dimensional and very close to reality.
Attention to detail
Every line and every shadow in realism demands close attention. Realism tattoos stand out for how meticulous they are, and the artist has to maintain a precision that leaves no room for error, since the smallest change can alter the whole look of the image.
Colour or black and grey
Realism is not limited to black and grey. Although many artists prefer it for a classic finish, the use of colour can capture in a more “realistic” way the exact temperature, nuance and tone of the image. The options are endless!
Depth and three-dimensionality
They are also characterised by the ability to create depth. This is achieved through shading techniques that play with the perception of volume and distance on the skin. It is what makes a face, a hand or an animal seem to sit “outside” the skin.
Technical complexity
Creating realism tattoos usually takes several sessions, because of the size and the level of detail. Realism artists need an advanced command of the techniques to create a design that lasts and keeps its look over the years.
Inspiration from art and photography
Many artists study the work of painters and photographers, observing how they capture scenes and people through light, colour and contrast. Art becomes an endless source of inspiration for the tattoo artist.
How do you look after a realism tattoo?
Because of all the detail, realism tattoos need thorough care to keep looking good over the years:
Caring for a realism tattoo starts in the studio. When the session is over, the artist will cover the tattoo with a dressing or cling film to protect it from possible infection. This first protection should stay on for between two and four hours to keep bacteria out of freshly tattooed skin.
Once that time has passed, you must clean the tattoo with warm water and a mild soap, free of fragrance and harsh ingredients. Do it with gentle movements, using only your fingertips, and avoid rubbing hard so you do not damage the design or lift ink from the surface layers of the skin.
Realism tattoos need proper moisturising to keep the detail sharp and bright. Apply a thin layer of cream made specifically for tattoos (alcohol and fragrance free) two to three times a day, following your artist's instructions. This prevents dryness and lets the colour and contrast settle properly.
Sun exposure can seriously damage your tattoo, as UV rays fade the tones and soften the contrast. For the first month, avoid any direct sun. After that, whenever the tattoo is uncovered, always use a high-factor sunscreen (SPF 50 or higher).
It is normal for the tattoo to itch or for small scabs to form as it heals. However, scratching or picking at those scabs can damage the detail and the shading of the design. Let the skin recover and shed those scabs naturally so the detail stays intact.
Fresh tattoos should be kept away from prolonged water. Avoid swimming pools, baths and the sea for the first month, as the chemicals and bacteria in them can affect healing and damage the detail of the tattoo. Go for quick showers and pat yourself dry gently.
Wear loose, comfortable clothing to avoid friction on the tattooed area, as too much friction can irritate the skin and affect healing. It is also a good idea to keep the area clean and avoid activities that expose it to dust or dirt, like the gym or outdoor sports, for the first two weeks.
