Watercolour tattoos: what are they?

The watercolour tattoos, also known as watercolour tattoos, are a tattoo aesthetic that brings the qualities of watercolour painting straight onto the skin. It is known for its soft colours and blends, mimicking the style of watercolour on paper. Unlike traditional tattoos, watercolour tattoos do not always have defined outlines, which gives them a much more fluid, natural look. This style allows great creative freedom, perfect for anyone after a one-off design.

Colour and shading

In watercolour tattoos, the colours are applied in light, translucent layers, creating effects of light and shadow that bring depth and movement to the design. The transitions between colours are subtle and harmonious, creating the gradient effect that is characteristic of this style. You can also bring in abstract elements, paint splashes and flowing lines that emulate the techniques used in traditional watercolour.

Every detail is carefully considered to capture the essence of this aesthetic. From flowers, landscapes, to animals and abstract compositions, watercolour tattoos offer endless design possibilities, always with a unique, personal touch.

Watercolour Tattoos in Valencia

Do you know what defines this style?

The technique behind this style lies in the ability to blend and soften the colours so that they stay vibrant over time. This style demands meticulous precision in terms of how pigments and colours work with each other and with the skin.

The aim of this aesthetic is to mimic the end result of traditional watercolour, through techniques for applying layers of colour so they mimic the transparency and fluidity of traditional watercolour. Using a wide combination of soft and and bright colours, applied in subtle, gradual transitions to achieve a gradient effect in the design.

The absence of defined outlines is another distinctive feature of watercolour tattoos. Instead of strong black lines, artists tend to use soft edges and聽flowing strokes to create a more natural, ethereal look. This approach lets the colours blend and move freely.

In every design we also pay close attention to聽saturation and colour balance聽to make sure the tattoo keeps its intensity and beauty in the long term.聽Specialised shading techniques and the layering聽of colour bring depth and realism to the design.

To achieve these effects, artists who specialise in watercolour have to master advanced blending and gradient techniques, which let them create a visual result similar to painting on paper. This takes not only artistic skill, but also an understanding of how skin heals and how colours interact during the healing process. That is why watercolour artists usually personalise every piece, adapting tones and transitions to your skin tone and the part of the body, ensuring a vibrant, lasting result.

Popular designs and themes in watercolour tattoos

  • Flowers and nature: Flowers are one of the favourite themes, as watercolour captures their delicacy and range of colour. Roses, lilies and cherry blossom are especially popular in this style.
  • Animals: Birds, fish or butterflies are perfect for watercolour tattoos thanks to their variety of colours and shapes. This style brings these creatures to life with an ethereal quality.
  • Abstract and geometric shapes: If you like abstract art or more minimal designs, you can go for watercolour in geometric shapes or colour washes that create unique patterns. These tattoos tend to be elegant and artistic, and allow a lot of personalisation.
  • Personal pieces: Watercolour is also ideal for representing personal, sentimental elements such as quotes, names or symbols that hold deep meaning for the wearer.

How do you look after a watercolour tattoo?

Watercolour tattoos need special care to keep their colour, as they tend to use more delicate tones and colour transitions that can fade more easily than other kinds of tattoo. Follow these steps to make sure your tattoo stays sharp over time:

After the session, your artist will cover the area with a dressing or protective film that you should keep on for the recommended time, usually 2 to 4 hours. This lets the skin start to heal and keeps bacteria out.
Once you remove the dressing, gently clean the tattoo with warm water and a mild or antibacterial soap. Dry it with a paper towel or clean towel, patting lightly, without rubbing.

Moisturising is key to keeping the tattoo in good condition. Apply a cream made for tattoos or a moisturiser free of fragrance and alcohol. This helps the skin recover and prevents thick scabs forming. Apply a thin layer, as too much can block the pores and slow healing. Repeat this moisturising several times a day for the first two weeks, or until the tattoo is fully healed.

Watercolour tattoos are especially sensitive to sunlight because of their soft colours. Direct sun exposure can fade the tones, making the tattoo lose its intensity and definition.
During healing (around a month), avoid sun exposure completely. Once healed, use a broad-spectrum sunscreen (SPF 50 or higher) every time the tattoo is exposed to the sun. This step is essential to keep the colours in good condition over the years.

For the first two weeks, avoid submerging the tattoo in water, as it can cause infection and affect healing, as well as fading the colours prematurely.
Go for short showers and make sure the tattoo is not under running water for long periods.

During healing it is normal for the skin around the tattoo to itch or form thin scabs. Avoid scratching or picking the scabs, as you could lift parts of the pigment and leave patchy areas in the tattoo.
If the itching is intense, apply a small amount of moisturiser to ease the discomfort without damaging the tattoo.

Wear comfortable, loose clothing while it heals so the tattoo does not rub or get irritated. Avoid rough or tight fabrics that could interfere with healing.
If you are doing outdoor activities, consider covering the tattoo with clothing that protects it from sun and friction, especially in the first few weeks.

As mentioned above, watercolour tattoos may need touch-ups over time, as light colours and transitions can fade more easily. Talk to your artist about touch-ups after the initial healing to make sure the design keeps its quality.
