Cover Tattoo

We all evolve. Our tastes change, our stories get rewritten and sometimes that tattoo that once meant so much no longer connects with who you are today. Maybe the design has aged badly, the lines have blurred over time, or you are simply tired of seeing it every day. The good news is that you do not have to live with a tattoo you no longer like: the cover up tattoo is the solution you are looking for.

A cover up is not simply “hiding” an old tattoo with a new one. It is an artistic and technical process that completely transforms your skin, respecting the limitations of the original design while creating something entirely new and in line with who you are now. In this article we tell you everything you need to know to take that step.

What exactly is a cover up tattoo?

A cover up tattoo is a tattoo designed specifically to cover or disguise an old tattoo you no longer want. Unlike a conventional tattoo done on untouched skin, a cover up works over existing ink, which takes more complex technical planning and a strategic design.

The aim is for the original tattoo to disappear completely beneath the new design, or at least to be so well folded in that it goes unnoticed. To achieve that we use advanced shading techniques, dark saturated colours and compositional elements that “trick” the eye into not seeing the old tattoo.

When is the right time for a cover tattoo?

There are many reasons why someone decides to get a cover up. These are the most common situations we see at our studio:

The tattoo has aged badly

Over the years, some tattoos lose definition. The lines blur, the colours fade and the design loses its original visual impact. A cover up can revitalise that area with a fresh, modern design.

It no longer represents who you are

That tribal symbol you got at 18, an ex-partner's name, or that design you chose without thinking too hard... We all have stories we would rather leave behind. A cover up lets you rewrite your personal narrative on your own skin.

Because it was badly done

Not every tattoo is done with the same care and precision. Uneven lines, wrong proportions, colours that have migrated... If you simply are not convinced by how your tattoo looks, a professional cover up can put it right completely.

You go through personal or professional changes

Some environments require tattoos to be discreet or non-existent. Other times, your personal aesthetic has simply moved towards something more minimal or elegant, and that large, bold tattoo no longer fits you.

Key points

This is probably the question we get asked most. The honest answer is: almost any tattoo can be covered, but not always with any design.

Whether a cover up will work depends on several factors:

  • The size of the original tattoo: Small tattoos are easier to cover than large ones. The new design will need to be 20-50% bigger than the original to cover it completely and create enough “visual distraction”.
  • The density and darkness of the ink: A tattoo with a lot of solid black is harder to cover than one with fine lines or light colours. Tribal tattoos, for example, are more of a challenge than a fine-line or watercolour piece.
  • The condition of the skin: If the skin is damaged by badly done tattoos, scars or previous allergic reactions, you may need to wait or consider alternatives such as laser sessions before the cover up.
  • The placement on the body: Some areas offer more room to “expand” the design (back, thigh, full arm), while others are more limited (wrist, ankle, fingers).
With very dark or dense tattoos, we sometimes recommend a few laser removal sessions to lighten the base ink. That does not remove the tattoo, but it creates a more workable “canvas” for the cover up.

Which designs work best for cover tattoos?

Not every tattoo style is equally effective for covering previous work. These are the ones that give the best results:

Realism

The use of deep shadows and gradients camouflages old ink perfectly. Portraits, animals, landscapes... Realism offers the visual density needed to hide what lies beneath.

Traditional Japanese

Dragons, koi, cherry blossom, waves... The traditional Japanese style uses dark backgrounds and complex compositional elements that work perfectly for covering previous tattoos.

Full-coverage designs

Full sleeves, whole back pieces or designs that “wrap” a limb are ideal because the eye focuses on the overall composition, not on the individual details where the old tattoo might be.

The cover up process: what to expect

1. Initial consultation

The first thing is to assess the tattoo you want to cover. The artist will look at its size, colours, density and placement to work out which options are viable. It is important to come with an open mind: even if you have a clear idea, it may need to change significantly.

2. Bespoke design

The artist will create a specific design that takes into account every line, every shadow of the old tattoo. The dark elements of the original design will be folded into the densest areas of the new tattoo. This process can take several weeks.

3. The tattoo session

Cover ups usually need longer sessions than a conventional tattoo, as we are working on skin that has already been tattooed. Depending on the size, several sessions spread over time may be necessary.

4. Aftercare

Follow your artist's instructions is crucial. The skin needs to heal properly so the colours settle well and the cover up keeps its visual impact long term.

Common mistakes when planning a cover up

  • Wanting the same size: The new tattoo always has to be bigger than the original. Trying to cover it with a design of the same size or smaller guarantees the old one will still show.

  • Choosing very delicate designs: Fine line, pure watercolour or minimalist designs rarely work for cover ups. You need visual density, contrast and elements that carry weight in the composition.

  • Not trusting your artist's judgement: Your artist sees hundreds of skins a year and knows what works and what does not. If they suggest changes to your original idea, there is a technical reason behind it. Trust their experience.

  • Having unrealistic expectations: A cover up will never be exactly like a tattoo done on untouched skin. There will be limitations. But in the hands of an experienced professional, the result can be just as impressive and completely transformative.

FAQs

Does a cover up hurt more than a normal tattoo?

The sensation is similar, though some people report that previously tattooed skin is slightly more sensitive. It depends on the person and the part of the body.

Technically yes, but each extra layer limits the design options further. It is better to get it right first time by working with an experienced artist.

If the old tattoo has healed completely (at least 3 months, ideally 6-12 months), you can go ahead with the cover up. If it is very recent, it is better to wait.

Not completely. Light colours (yellow, white, pale pink) are translucent and dark ink will show through them. That is why cover ups usually use mid and dark tones.

A well-executed cover up blends in perfectly with the rest of your tattooed skin. The key is choosing an artist with demonstrable experience in this kind of work.
